Laser Marking Steers a new course in manufacturing
As technology has advanced laser marking, have created new markets to build ever faster marking speeds and greater precision and tagging of images. Continuing the design evolution of the cavity laser beam steering and focusing optics, and computer hardware and software are expanding the role of the systems.
Managerial beam
Of the available technologies marking, laser-guided beam marking systems provide users with greater flexibility image of a fast, permanent, non-contact marking process. As the processes of increasingly automated manufacture and sale after a more frequent monitoring, laser markers are often the only method available to produce individually unique, permanent images at high speed.
Manga-directed laser marking systems usually incorporate one or CO2 or Nd: YAG laser. The CO2 laser emits continuous wave output in the far infrared (10.6 um wavelength), while the Nd: YAG laser emits near-infrared (1.06 um) in either a CW mode or pulse (1-50 kHz). The Nd: YAG is also unique in their ability to produce very short pulses of high peak power when operating in pulsed mode. For example, a typical 60-W Nd-media consumer: YAG laser can peak powers around 90 kW at the pulse rate of 1-kHz.
The optical delivery of either a single focus lens assembly or a fixed combination upcollimator and flat-field assembly of the lens. In any case, the laser beam is directed by the work surface by mirrors mounted on two high-speed, controlled galvanometers computer.
The simple assembly center offers the advantages of low cost and fewer optical components and is routinely used CO2 laser. The flat lens design field, although more expensive, remains the focal point in the beam of the mark in a more consistent image characteristics across the field marked. The overall objective of the field also produces a higher power density on the surface of the simple assembly work focused because of the short effective focal length. The design of the flat-field lens is always preferable for high precision applications and high-image quality and is usually incorporated with Nd: YAG lasers.
Both designs provide the user with a selection of lenses that provide both the diameter of the area of marking and mark the line width. A longer focal length lenses larger provide areas of work, but the line width was also expanded, reducing the power density on the work surface. The user must compensate by either increasing the laser output power and / or decrease the speed dial, which usually consists of two lenses and may be placed anywhere in the beam path before focus lens. A beam expander is often used instead of increasing the beam path approximately 10 feet in the beam is expanded through its inherent tendency to separate as it exits the resonator cavity. A spatial filter insertion into the expansion of the beam produces the best quality in the mesh systems, changing the beam through a small opening.
The last optical element which is a laser beam focus lens. With CO2 lasers, this objective is usually one of several materials: zinc selenide (ZnSe), gallium arsenide (GaAs) or germanium (Ge). ZnSe, a dense material, which is yellow more transparent to wavelengths, is by far the most common of these materials, and enables low power consumption, HeNe laser beam through the lineup. This is a great advantage over GaAs or Ge which are opaque to light in the visible spectrum.
Nd: YAG almost always used the expansion of the beam, usually in the range 2x to 5x, due to their small initial beam diameters. spatial filters for CO2 lasers must be superficial, but the Nd: YAG can be placed inside the cavity laser itself, and different sizes are available for mode selection.
Nd: YAG laser optical lenses used as BK-7 and fused silica lens. The 1.6 um wavelength of these lasers is close enough to the visible spectrum to allow for adaptation to the standard with the optical devices AR coating right to direct the laser light. For example, the microscope objectives can be delivered Nd: YAG laser light to the area of VLSI circuits for micro- road drivers. As mentioned earlier, delivering a Nd: YAG laser fiber-optic bundle offers incredible advantages over fixed delivery optics. The advantage of fiber unique to Nd: YAG and created a huge growth in their use for industrial materials processing.
Optical fiber delivery of Nd: YAG
The use of fiber delivery YAG laser is so extensive in the industry that should be discussed in more detail. Approximately 90 percent of the new Nd: YAG laser welding installations involve the delivery of fiber optics. Because the wavelength of 1.6-um is transmitted through optical glass, which can be used in standard optical fiber. conventional beam delivery is very cumbersome and prone to misalignment and contamination to the optics, and can be very expensive due to design custom. Fiber delivers real answer to all these problems. The benefits are:
- Fibres deliver laser energy across distances that in practice it would be impossible to achieve with conventional optics. Distances up to 50 meters routinely get enough.
- Stability and precision are better because only the final focus optics need to be held in an exact relationship of the workpiece.
- Most applications can be handled with normal delivery hardware (avoiding custom design).
- The fibers are flexible and, within the constraints of the minimum radius of curvature, may follow any desired path to the workpiece.
- The workpiece can be held stationary while the output optical fiber and move during the process making the system ideal for use with robotic manipulation.
- The fibers make the design of time and energy sharing distribution systems beam a practical possibility. The use of these systems greatly increases the flexibility and versatility of the individual lasers allowing them to deal with several stations work or produce multiple outputs simultaneously.
- Access to the laser head for routine maintenance is improved from the position of the head is not due to delivery beam system. The low cost of the fiber can be sent to areas that are dangerous due to explosives or radiation, while the laser head is in a non-hazardous area.

The optics of the delivery fiber are simple and straightforward. The optical fiber used for laser delivery are usually the step-index fibers. There are several options to fiber optics beam delivery. The first is the single-fiber delivery of a single laser. The choice of a single-fiber delivery is easily justified by its ease of use, ease of integration into workstations, and the ability to update the system with other options in the future. Another option is fiber delivery of time-sharing, in which all of laser output can be directed to any of several fibers in demand. A single laser system can provide laser energy to several different stations work switching between them of up to 40 Hz These systems are typically used for laser welding in many different workstations, or to deliver the beam laser in different areas of a large assembly of the station.
The last option is called energy distribution. These systems divide laser output and send the energy in several fibers at once. Mirrors skim portions of the laser beam and direct input into receptacles for each of the fibers.
The measure skimming each mirror moves in the path of the beam determines the terms of trade. Typical systems of the share of energy-can split the beam at a maximum of four fibers. These systems are used to weld many parts at the same time in order to increase performance, or eliminate to the distortions which are often part of the welding sequence of a single assembly.
The computer system creates images marked by sending signals of motion leads to the galvanometer beam while the laser beam between beats white markings. The movement of the galvanometer-mounted mirrors directs the beam marked through the target surface like a pencil on drawing paper alphanumeric and graphic images.
Laser selection
Laser marking uses high intensity focused laser beam to generate heat in the work surface and induce a thermal reaction. A line readable, in contrast is produced by increasing the target surface annealing temperatures, melting or vaporization temperatures. Annealing and melting are used to induce a change of contrasting color in a wide variety of metals and plastics, ceramics and other non-metallic. The faster speeds are obtained marking increasing the temperature to the point of vaporization for metallic and nonmetallic record of many.
The wavelength near-infrared Nd: YAG laser is ideal for most metals and many plastics. The Nd: YAG can anneal or melt, both CW and pulsed mode and can provide the maximum pulsed power to burn. With many materials, the Nd: YAG can simultaneously record the surface and induce contrasting color change in the line of engraving.
The wavelength of far infrared CO2 laser is compatible with plastics, ceramics and organic materials. However, without the ability of high peak power required to achieve vaporization temperatures, the CO2 laser annealing or simply fusion the surface.
Advantage
Manga-engineered laser marking offers several advantages over other methods of marking. Most apparent is the unique combination of speed, permanence and flexibility of computer control. Although other technologies to provide one or two of these attributes, no other method offers all three in the same grade.
Many users also benefit from non-contact nature of laser marking. The only force applied to the workpiece marking cycle is very localized heating effect of the laser beam. No additional physical force is applied, with the exception of any appropriate part of proposed management designed into the system. Silicon wafers, silicon disk drive read / write heads and many other medical devices are examples of components that are too fragile marked for any mechanic. In addition, laser marking provides the permanence necessary to meet the requirements for life image, while print marking does not.
Laser-marking systems also excel in the creation of intricate graphic images. Nd: YAG can produce line widths mark the order of 0.001 inches or less, which, when combined with the sharp resolution of 0.0002 mm / step, you can produce images with greater detail than the contact mechanical or template systems.
Regardless of the justifications specific procedures for the incorporation of laser marking, the application of technology can result in significant savings. With operating costs for the Nd: YAG system, users have reported cost savings of more than 90 percent and reductions in quality control and inventory costs.
